Porcelain Patio with Garden Bar — A Dublin Evening Entertaining Space

When our Dublin clients asked for an outdoor space they could use after work — even on cooler Irish evenings — we knew a standard slab patio wouldn't be enough. They wanted somewhere to cook, serve drinks and entertain friends without constantly going back indoors.

The answer was a porcelain-tiled patio with a bespoke garden bar, integrated seating and a layered lighting scheme that transforms the garden once the sun goes down.

Porcelain is one of the best materials for patios in Ireland. It's frost-resistant, low-maintenance and available in finishes that mimic natural stone without the porosity problems. For this project we chose large-format tiles in a neutral tone that complements both the house brickwork and the planting beds.

Beneath the tiles we installed a proper sub-base: compacted hardcore, sharp sand and a full mortar bed. Drainage falls away from the house at 1:60 — essential in Dublin where heavy rain is never far away.

The bar unit was built with blockwork and clad to match the patio aesthetic. We ran power for a small fridge socket and LED strip lighting under the counter overhang. Timber seating wraps around two sides, giving comfortable space for six to eight guests without needing extra furniture.
